What should I say or do when a bill collector calls me?

If your bills are paid on time, a creditor shouldn’t be calling you. If you receive a call from someone who claims to be a creditor, do not give out your personal information such as your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, address, birth date, or any other personal information. It could be a scam, especially if you don’t owe anybody any money.

If the call is coming from a legitimate debt collector to whom you owe money, the best thing to do is to tell them the name and address of your lawyer. The law is very clear; once a person is represented by an attorney, a bill collector can no longer contact that person whether by phone or by mail.
