What Should I Say or Do When a Debt Collector Calls Me?
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a debt collector, do not give out ANY of your personal information such as, your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, address or birth date. Try to obtain information from them instead. Most importantly, you want to find out what the name of their company is, and the address where they are located. If they become evasive, refuse to provide the information or hang up on you, it is likely that they are criminal scammers who you should not pay any money to. However, if the caller can be identified as a legitimate debt collector to whom you do owe money, the best thing to do is to tell them the name and address of your lawyer.
When you are a client of DCSD you will be able to advise them you have an attorney and to provide them our information to allow us to follow up on your behalf.
